Vancouver Hot Pot: Boiling Point

Who doesn’t like hot pot? Especially a hot pot to yourself! Well Vancouver has these little hot pot places all to yourself! Where your food doesn’t get cold if your a slow eater and I’m a slow eater.  It takes me about an hour to eat a bowl to myself. So I like my food to stay hot. I’ve been here a few times and if your around the area it’s a great place to go, just not in the summer. I came here once in the summer and I was sweating like no tomorrow!

Atmosphere: The atmosphere here can get really crowded, especially at dinner time. Besides having to wait for seats, it’s pretty loud since this is a family restaurant where you might hear babies crying or just people talking loud. So I wouldn’t recommend coming here on your first date. During lunch hour there usually is no wait. This place gets pretty hot, so don’t be wearing your wool sweaters and scarves here.

Price: This place is pretty pricey for a one hot pot. You pick either rice or a bowl of vermecilli with your hot pot. The picture above us is about $12-15 per a pot. If you go during lunch time you get a free iced green tea or black tea of your choice. Dinner you don’t get a free drink sad to say and the hot pot are alittle bit more pricey but same size.

Food: The food here is amazing! There are spicy and non spicy hot pot. You get to pick how spicy you want your dish. If your Asian and like stinky tofu, they got that here. On the table you get to make your own sauce to dip, which is great when you want different taste in your food. The house special is the go to if you don’t know which one you like (top picture) and the lamb hot pot (bottom picture) which is not spicy, but as you can see lots of stuff in the lamb hot pot. Pair is with a fresh milk tea! Underneath your hot pot is a fire lit with wax, it last for about 30 mins or more. But when you feel that you don’t need the fire no more you have the choice to ask them to shut it off. Which is a great thing, so your food is always hot.

Service: The service here are kinda not what you expect. Some of them have an attitude like getting annoy of customer, standing around and talk to their croworkers. Sometimes I know it gets busy but no need to place the bowl on the table so hard. The Richmond location has a lot of staff but only some of them would come around to fill your water or tea up and ask if you want your fire to be shut off. The Burnaby location not as much and it can be hard to get their attention when you need something because the way the tables are set up.

Location: There are two location one in Burnaby and one in Richmond. If you have a chance stop by at any of these or even both so you can experience both restaurant! There are other location around the world so check out this website of there is one where you live in! Tell me  your review on it!

Vancouver cheap eat – Deer Garden

Who doesn’t like cheap good food? But where and what is good? Is the portion worth it? Don’t you just hate it when your deciding where to eat but have a budget? I feel you there! I’ve got a good place for you to hit up if your in Vancouver or Richmond I come here often and I’ll tell you everything about it.

Atmosphere: This place can be busy during dinner time, if you don’t like the wait then make reservation. For lunch I find it moderate, no wait here. It maybe a bit loud but it always depends on where they sit you. I like it away from the door, it’s more quieter. It depends which location you eat at there are window seats in Richmond. Vancouver has one window seat. You will notice this is a good family restaurant and yes babies too!

Price: A big bowl of noodle soup is $11 tax included. Other dishes are no more then $10! Did I tell you the meal comes with a drink!

Food: The noodle soup you see above are chosen of your choice. You pick your soup, veggies, meat, seafood and type of noodle! And with additional charge you can get three piece of chicken wings or ox tongue and many more for a dollar something. If you don’t want noodle soup, while there are other food! There are many steamed rice bowls like with pork meat and sausages. If you like western food they got baked fatty cheese with pasta! The drink menu has a variety of drinks from pop to Hong Kong style milk tea to bubble tea.

Customer service: The customer service here aren’t as good as expected. There are rude servers that when you ask for too much they get annoy. The food is fast, especially the Vancouver location. Richmond location, not as fast.

Location: They have 4 locations, 3 in Richmond and 1 in Vancouver. I recommend the Vancouver one, not too pack and loud.

Pan Fried and Baked Chicken with Avocado and Rice

Processed with MOLDIV

Chicken is always a healthy to go meal, there are many ways you can cook chicken but here is just two ways to make chicken fast and easy. Had you ever ate chicken that taste very dry? Well I’ll show you a little way that will make your chicken taste juicy

  • Fresh Chicken breast (washed and clean all the sticky fat attached)
  • Chicken spice (Weber: Chicken kickin)
  • Teaspoon of chicken bouillon w/ 1 cup water or you can use chicken soup
  • Parsley

Let’s get to it

  • Pan Fried Chicken
  1. Heat your pan up with olive oil in high heat
  2. Put your chicken breast in
  3. Depending how thick your chicken breast is, if you don’t slice the chicken breast 15 mins on each side. If you do slice your chicken to a thinner portion it’s 10 mins on each side
  4. Once it start browning on each side pour in your chicken soup (DO NOT USE JUST WATER), the key is to not put the lid on
  5. When water is evaporated, check to see if chicken is cooked inside. If its not done continue step 4. Lower the heat, put in your spices and parsley, brown it a bit more.
  6. Serve it with avocado and rice
  • Baked Chicken Breast
  1. Preheat oven at 350
  2. Set up your baking pan with aluminium foil
  3. Rub Spices on your chicken breast and parsley
  4. Put in your baking pan with 1 cup of chicken soup

  6. Bake chicken for 25 mins, then check if it’s done
  7. Serve with avocado and rice

Vancouver Romantic and Family Restaurant – Provence Marinaside

Processed with MOLDIV

If you’re looking for somewhere romantic to take your special someone I recommend this nice restaurant called Provence Marinaside. My parents took me here for my birthday and it was our first time here, first impression? Not bad. It was lobster festival and they have the best lobster that I’ve tasted. This restaurant is based on their best seafood. So if your looking for steak or something, I wouldn’t recommend coming here. This is a nice place to go to on a sunny day, since it’s facing the Yaletown Coal Harbor.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere is a bit loud but not loud enough that you can’t hear your table. There is a patio seating here, so I recommend making reservations since in the summer the patio is very popular. When I first walked into this place it was more like family and elderly people. I like this that way because when there is young people, things get a little too loud. So if you prefer family time and just a romantic time with your significant other, this is a good spot.

Food: The food was awesome, we got the lobster festival three course menu and yes I do love three course menus. We had bread served to us when we were waiting for our order. You get to try their appetizers, entrees and dessert menu, which is good for family dinners! For our appetizers (top row) we had a Lobster bisque soup , Lobster salad and Lobster with smoked tomato gratin. I had the Lobster salad, it was pure meat which is what everyone loves! For our entrees we had the Lobster Thermidor, Whole Atlantic lobster (last rectangle) and Seared Lois lake steel head with lobster. I had the Whole Atlantic lobster which was filling, lots of lobster meat. For our dessert we had a strawberry cheese cake and a coffee creme brulee.

Customer service: I find the service a little rush during dinner time, our server seemed like he wanted us to older fast and quick. Every time when we finish one plate our table was cleaned which was nice because some people do eat messy. Water was given to us frequently in between dishes.

Price:  For this 3 course Lobster festival menu was $56 per person, it was a good deal and filling. I had checked the menu as well it wasn’t pricey, just like any normal restaurant a entree would be around $30.

Others: After dinner I recommend taking a stroll around the Yaletown seawall. You get to look at the boats, water view and see across Granville Island.

Food, health

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup

Processed with MOLDIV

This recipe had always worked for me since I started to take care of myself. We all hate being sick with the sniffles, coughs and the chills. But here is my secret to curing this cold. This recipe has a little twist of different kind of herbs and spice which brings out the richness in the soup to stop your cold. A lemon added in the end, helps fight the cold and the sore throat. It’s better to cook up some soup with helps than to take medications that make you drowsy and more sick.

I will take you step by step

  1. Cook your choice of 2 cups of pasta and set a side
  2. In a big pot add a dash of olive oil, saute half of an onion and garlic
  3. Add 1 can of chicken stock with 2 cups of water
  4. While your bringing it to a boil, your 5 drumsticks should be cut ( bone and meat)
  5. Add chicken : bone + meat. Add your herbs: rosemary, thyme, mint
  6. Let it sit and simmer for an hour or so
  7. Add in your veggies of choice: Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, corn
  8. Let your veggies cook and then give it a taste
  9. Add a dash of : ground pepper, cayenne powder (paprika), chili powder and garlic powder and then give it another taste, adjust to your taste
  10. Add pasta, let it simmer for 30 minutes
  11. Squeeze a lemon and your parsley and give it a taste

As you can see this recipe does not require salt, I like to stay away from salt since it’s not that good for your body especially when you are sick. Your herbs and spices brings out the richness in the soup already. This serves about 6 people and it takes about 2 hours if you want a good tasty soup. I hope you get well soon!

Vancouver Fine Dining – Minami

What is a good spot when you are looking for Japanese fine dining, not too pricey but still elegant but most of all filling. I would say Minami is a go to spot. I’ve only been here with my girlfriends for lunch when it’s not too crowded and loud. All this was about $90 for three. We had a table set in the middle for us so we didn’t get a window seat. Since this restaurant is located on a strip of resturants and shops, I don’t think there is a view. But a view of branches.

Atmosphere: I find this restaurant very casual in the day time. It’s elegant and dim inside. Not too loud, because no one likes hearing plates, glasses and people talking so loud that they can’t hear a thing their table is talking about. This resturant is one of the romantic fine dining to bring your significant other with. Since it’s a different atmosphere at night but I can be wrong because I’ve never been here for dinner.

Food: The part you all been waiting for and who can forget about the food. My girlfriends and I thought the food was really good and filling for lunch. We had a three course lunch menu. We had miso soup as our first course, then we got our 4 bowls of assorted tasting entree. From left to right: A salad made with arugula and goat cheese, topped with a sweet dressing. 2 piece of salmon sashimi, 1 piece of tuna sashimi with a little bit of wasabi sauce added on top. Roasted beef with sauce, purple yam and potatoes. Last is the Saba with broccolini. Our next course was the assorted sushi, they were the bomb! You have to eat this slowly, to absorb the yummy texture and flavour. Next was the raspberry sorbet, with berries and a Japanese cracker on top. We also order a roll of sushi, even though we were full at this point we were able to finish it all.

Service: Our server was really poilte, she took our order giving us suggestion on drinks to pair it with. Our tea we’re always constantly being filled and our server made sure our food was good. The service were fast, food came out in 5 mins.

Cost: The pricing in this menu can be alittle pricey but not too pricey to a point that it is not satisfying and not filling. A roll was $15 that had 6 pieces. My ice tea was $3 with no refill.

Location: This is located in Yaletown -Mainland, Vancouver BC.

Steak with mash potatoes

If your looking for something simple after a long day at work but healthy. Steak and mash potatoes, with an avocado is a go to but I don’t have any today. Bummer! Well anyways this is a easy recipe, my all time favourite. I like my steak rare because I don’t like hard dry steak. If your not use to eating rare or raw seafood don’t eat it rare, make it medium rare. Medium rare is most common favourite.

  1. Steak: I used a pinch of salt and sprinkled fresh ground pepper on both sides. I don’t recommend the steak sauce and all that creamy sauce because it’s all just fat. Use olive oil, it’s healthier than the rest of the other oil. I recommend marinating the oil with your steak. Why not just but the oil on the pan?! NO! Because your most likely to use too much oil and no one likes to eat a oily steak! Have your pan on hot heat. Cook each side for 5 mins if you like it rare. If you don’t like rare, 10 mins on each side for medium rare, but it depends how thick is the steak you chose.
  2. Mash potatoes: I like using red potatoes, but any potatoes are fine. Cook it until it’s soft. Stern the water and mash away! I use unsalted butter and homo milk. Everyone has their own taste to things, this is why there aren’t measurement because this is your dish and you can make it however you like. No one got time to pull out measuring cups when their hungry! If you like your mash potatoes soft had more milk. If you like your mash potatoes with more taste I recommend cutting one slice of butter the thickness as an iPhone 6s Plus. Please try not to use so much butter because it can cause blood clots and just fat! The one thing people always never do as their cooking is TASTE YOUR FOOD AS YOU GO! I don’t mean tasting a chicken that is clearly not cook, it’s common sense. Once the potatoes are done sprinkle with some fresh brown pepper.
  3. Last but not least! Finally eat! Cheers to good food.

Quick Vancouver Food – Cathy House

On a cold rainy day like today in the city of Vancouver, you ask yourself “What is a quick fast go to hot noodle soup cafe” Well I got you there. There is nothing better than going to a cafe that taste like homemade food. I been coming to this cafe since I was in 8th grade and it had never failed me once.

Service: The owners are an old happy Asian married couple, who is always really welcoming. They know you’re a frequent customer once they know your name. They’ve always got something to gossip about. One time they told me that these two brothers had pet mice and snake, I know it’s disgusting but some kids find that not scary and gross. I have no idea why. Another time the wife told me she slipt down the stairs and had to close their business for two weeks. Their service is quick and fast, once the husband takes your order he radio’s it to the wife in the back to make it. While he makes your drinks and bring out cutlery for you. Find this sanitary because when cutlery are set out for too long bacteria start to grow on cutleries.

Food & Drinks: A must try is the “Curry rice noodle w/ fish ball” it kills on a cold weather day. If you’re not into the little bit of spicy taste, you can go for the “Wonton noodle soup” or the “Rice noodle w/ dimpling soup”. If your sick and not feeling the noodle, I recommend the shark fin soup (it’s not real shark fin). Don’t forget to order your noodles with a ” Cold Hong Kong style milk tea!” The hong kong style milk tea is up to how sweet you want it, they give you the sugar syrup and you decide how sweet you like your tea. My all time favorite bubble tea here is the “Dream of lover w/ pearls” it’s a mixture of mocha and chocolate blended together. If you’re looking for a more of a summer fruity drink order”Green apple, watermelon or strawberry w/ kiwi” you can never go wrong with a refreshing drink like these three.

Atmosphere: Other people would call this place a bit ghetto in there, because it’s not fancy or updated. But hey your going there for the food, you’re not living there! I recommend in the school year do not go there at 11:40-12:15 because that is lunch time for the kids. You will not find a table to eat here! Because kids call to make reservations for lunch. So let them eat during their lunch break since education matters to kids. After school closer to the summer hot days there are kids here that likes to order drinks, so line ups can be long at this time.

Cost: Their bowls of noodle soup and a Hong Kong Style Milk Tea is no more than $8. The prices are reasonable because of the kids that come here during lunch. It’s a great deal and what matters is that your full in the end!  If you just like curry fish ball or curry beef balls is about $4 for 5 pieces. It’s a great snack!
